STORY BEHIND THE SONG: 1996 was a very pivotal year for me. A lot happened that led me to thinking of myself as a musician. It was a real visceral time. I was embroiled in a Fleetwood Mac sized melodrama of unrequited love; had the band of my dreams (or so I thought) that was falling apart slowly at the seams by circumstance and a lot of bullshit; and it was the first time excesses started catching up with people I knew. An acqaintence had OD'd and it was a pretty shattering thing for my little circle of artist friends. It just wasn't supposed to happen that way. There was no blaze of glory. Just an end. I started seeing the self-destructiveness involved in the comfort in a lot of the people around me sought. And in turn, saw that very thing in myself. There are a lot of things we do to feel falsely comfortable. Eat too much. Fuck everything that approaches you. Take drugs you know will kill your body. Get into relationships that will kill your spirit. I wrote the lyrics for this tune in 15 minutes. Parked in front of 6/8 studios on 2nd Ave. Sitting iin my old station wagon, Rita. This is the only tune so far that I've written collaboratively, and it was a great |
