LYRICS

Pointing…skyward…azure blankets are…
torn wide…open…
bleeding black angry lines
Wake up…gaping..bad news carrying flies…
you there…sitting…
your un-eloquent lies

Do you order coffee with your breakfast
Do you live like it could be your last
Do you kiss your children send them packing
Do your people always kiss your ass
Do they treat you as if you’re Messiah
A messiah with no rules or blame
In your ivory tower waving worlds so far away
So far away

You believe, what you do
There’re holes that run right thru your truth
You believe in your mind
That you are always right

How can you sleep…How can you breathe
If I lived your life and you lived mine
Reason is much harder to disguise

Stabbing…eastward…amber blankets are…
folded…painted
A most beautiful sky
You there…standing…with your face of denial…
you there…watching…with an angry smile

Do you order coffee with your breakfast
Do you live like it could be your last
Do you kiss your children send them packing
Do your people always kiss your ass
Do they treat you as if you’re Messiah
A messiah with no rules or blame
What made you think that other world’s so far away
So far away

You believe, what you do
There’re holes that run right thru your truth
You believe in your mind
That you are always right

How can you sleep…How can you breathe
How can you love?
If I lived your life and you lived mine
Your purpose is much harder to define

STORY BEHIND THE SONG:

In the wake of 9/11, all the artists I knew were "writing it out". Getting their rage, sadness, confusion, pain, and grief out in art, song, words.

I was just dumbstruck. For months, I couldn't think of putting any of it down. There were no words. Just like on that day, when I slowly dropped my things on the way out the door, slowly sat on the couch, and did not move until night fall.

I saw a line of black smoke trailing across the bit of NYC skyline I had access to turn to white...on the most beautiful blue skied day many of us had seen in a while.

The aftermath is what brought up my rage though. Violence begetting more violence. The same old story, and my question here goes out to all...on all sides...who inflict pain in the name of their cause. I'm sure they all sleep like kittens...I still just don't understand how.
